Program introduction
Polar Knowledge Canada (POLAR) is opening a call for proposals (CFP) through its Grants and Contributions for Northern Science and Technology funding program. This is a regional call that will support Yukon-based projects. Successful projects will advance knowledge on the call's strategic theme: climate change impacts and adaptation strategies in the Yukon.
This Yukon-based regional call aligns with recent initiatives highlighting the connections between climate change, community well-being, and ecosystem health. The call reflects on the 50-year anniversary of Together Today for Our Children Tomorrow, as well as recent recommendations by governments and youth on the need to amplify youth voices and support community-led initiatives that aim to create sustainable solutions and futures for all Yukon communities.
Community engagement research approach
POLAR recognizes the principles of First Nations' self-determination in research and the important role of First Nations in ensuring research support and advancing community priorities. A stated outcome of POLAR's funding program is strengthened Northern and Indigenous leadership in science and technology.
Proposal submissions will be prioritized in the following order:
Category 1
Community-led: Proposals with a lead applicant from a Yukon First Nation or Transboundary Indigenous Government, community-based organization, or Yukon community.
Category 2
Community-partnered: Proposals with a lead applicant that collaborates with a Yukon First Nation or Transboundary Indigenous Government, community-based organization, or Yukon community.
Category 3
No community partnership: Proposals that do not have a partner from a Yukon First Nation or Transboundary Indigenous Government, community-based organization, or Yukon community.
Overview
Available funding and award value
The current allocation for this call is $650,000 per year for three years. Typical projects funded by POLAR have an average annual budget of $150,000. Small-budget projects are still encouraged to apply. Projects with budgets over $150,000 per year with clearly defined requirements will also be considered.
Projects funded through this call must adhere to the funding program's terms and conditions, POLAR's Grants and Contributions to Support the Advancement of Northern Science and Technology, (Science and Technology Program, contribution stream). The purpose of the S&T Program is to fund science and technology activities in line with the Canadian High Arctic Research Station's (CHARS) priority areas. Expected results include strengthened Northern and Indigenous leadership in S&T.
POLAR will determine the funding amounts based on the financial needs for each project, in consideration of the following:
- The amount of funds available;
- The amount of funding required to achieve expected project results;
- The volume of applications received; and
- The merit of a specific application as determined by the Program's evaluation criteria.
Duration
POLAR will support projects that will start no earlier than April 1, 2023 and will span for a period of 1 to 3 years. All projects must have an end date of March 31, 2026 at the latest.
