The Research and Knowledge Initiative (RKI) is a competitive, merit-based contributions funding program that supports data and research on issues related to public infrastructure and communities.
In 2019, under the Research and Knowledge Initiative, Infrastructure Canada committed $3 million to the World Council on City Data to support the Data for Canadian Cities Pilot Project, which aims to help municipalities build their capacity to leverage data to support community-level decision-making. The Research and Knowledge Initiative is currently inviting research proposals under the theme: Cultivating Community Data and Research to Inform Public Infrastructure Decision-making. Submission deadline is October 25, 2021.
2021 Call For Proposals
The current Research and Knowledge Initiative call for proposals invites projects that strengthen the development and use of community-level data and research related to public infrastructure in cities, rural and remote areas, and Indigenous communities across Canada. Projects should address a current or emerging public infrastructure issue of broad relevance from a local or place-based perspective, engage a wide range of stakeholders, share knowledge in broad and lasting ways, and be designed to deliver intended results and ensure strong stewardship of resources.
Infrastructure Canada invites legal entities validly incorporated or registered in Canada, including academic institutions, industry, research, and professional associations, Indigenous organizations, community and regional organizations, and other non-profit or for-profit organizations to apply to this program. Applications are also welcome from provincial, territorial, regional municipal or Indigenous governments in Canada, international not-for-profit legal entities validly incorporated or registered abroad, and from individuals who are not affiliated with an organization.
The purpose of the Research and Knowledge Initiative is to advance the understanding of public infrastructure needs, challenges, and opportunities relevant to Canadians. The program aims to strengthen the evidence base on public infrastructure and communities in Canada, facilitate collaboration and partnership among key public infrastructure actors and stakeholders, and support data, research, and knowledge-sharing activities.
