The 2018-2023 action plan A Québec for all ages
is the second interdepartmental action plan resulting from the government policy on active aging Aging and living together, at home, in one's community, in Quebec . Stemming from the latter, orientation 3 aims to create healthy, safe and welcoming environments in the communities. Thus, the government wishes to increase the mobility of seniors, which is a crucial factor in their well-being since this mobility allows them to access health care, to travel to businesses and services and to activities of the community and their relatives.
Moreover, mobility can become a major issue for seniors in rural regions since the public and adapted transportation services offered in the regions do not always meet their needs, for reasons related to the vehicles used, the the eligibility of seniors for paratransit as well as the accessibility of services (e.g.: low floor or not) or their terms of use (e.g.: fare, schedule, route, places of boarding and landing).
To help public transit organizations in rural areas increase the mobility of seniors on their territory, the Seniors' Secretariat of the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux and the Ministère des Transports have decided to set up the Regional public transit assistance program – Age-friendly municipality.
The program has been in effect since May 3, 2022 and ends on March 31, 2023. It covers eligible expenses as of January 1 , 2022.
