Call for projects to support initiatives for Indigenous seniors
For several years now, the Québec government has been reiterating its determination to continue improving the living conditions of seniors, including members of First Nations and Inuit communities.
Each year, the Secrétariat aux aînés (SA) du ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (MSSS) and the Secrétariat aux affaires autochtones (SAA) fund projects designed to combat the abuse of Indigenous seniors and to promote their proper treatment as part of Measure 1.1.19 of the Government Action Plan for the Social and Cultural Development of the First Nations and Inuit: "Support initiatives aimed at combating abuse and promote the proper treatment of Indigenous seniors."
At the same time, under Measure 3.2.9 of the Action Plan, “Encourage the transmission of traditional knowledge by supporting, in particular, intergenerational activities and seniors’ groups,” the SA is funding projects to encourage the transmission of knowledge.
To provide greater flexibility for responding to the needs of Indigenous communities and organizations with regard to seniors, and for carrying out projects, the SAA is merging the funding for these two measures until the Action Plan has been fully implemented. As such, interested communities and organizations will be able to submit their project under a single call for projects aimed at supporting initiatives for Indigenous seniors.
Up to $10,000 in financial assistance may be granted per project or initiative. However, depending on funding availability, assistance could vary up or down, depending on the nature and number of projects submitted. While funding is provided on an ad hoc basis, submitted projects must be completed no later than March 31, 2022.
Objectives
Rooted in the main orientations of the Action Plan, this call for projects has a two-fold objective: to establish a varied, effective, relevant and culturally reassuring service offer that contributes both to combating abuse and promoting proper treatment, and to encourage active reflection between Indigenous youth and seniors on the role of traditional knowledge.
In this perspective, the projects submitted must satisfy the objectives of one of the two components of the call for projects:
- Proper treatment component
- Have the two-fold objective of combating abuse and promoting the proper treatment of Indigenous seniors
- Transmission of traditional knowledge component
- Develop the role of seniors in the community;
- Enable young people to learn about and affirm their cultural identity;
- Engage seniors to promote their social inclusion;
- Promote the coordination of several community stakeholders in developing and disseminating the project;
- Raise the project’s profile in the community.
