Building on over 110 years of history in the creation of national parks, national historic sites, and national marine conservation areas, Parks Canada is launching a new program for the creation of a network of national urban parks. In collaboration with various partners, Parks Canada will create or expand urban parks that are readily accessible to people in Canada’s urban centres and provide opportunities to connect to, and learn about, local nature and culture.
National urban parks will contribute to protecting biodiversity, supporting climate resilience, connecting people to nature, improving mental health and wellness, and increasing social inclusion. Parks Canada will work closely with Indigenous partners to ensure national urban parks also provide space for Indigenous stewardship, promote Indigenous voices and stories, and offer opportunities for connections to lands and waters based on Indigenous knowledge and values.
