The purpose of this funding opportunity is to strengthen the evidence base and expand alcohol research in identified areas, to foster alcohol-related research capacity and/or to inform the development of future larger scale research projects. This may include the collection of data (both health and non-health) for the purpose of research that is relevant to understanding alcohol use, health/social outcomes related to alcohol consumption (spanning the full range from abstinence to problematic use), and/or detailing demographic and social characteristic information related to alcohol consumption levels.

This funding opportunity will support projects relevant to the following research areas: Alcohol policies: evaluating federal and/or provincial/territorial/municipal/Indigenous governments and/or communities policies, programs and practices for the regulation of alcohol that have the potential to impact health, and generating evidence to inform the evolution of future activities. This could include comparisons of marketing, availability, pricing, and distribution of alcoholic products; prevention, harm reduction and treatment of problematic alcohol use: Research into effective interventions, including meaningful and culturally-safe interventions for Indigenous Peoples, to prevent problematic use, to reduce the harms of use and to treat the full spectrum of problematic alcohol use; evaluation of existing interventions and the development of new feasibility/demonstration/pilot projects are eligible. Key populations and determinants of health: Research into how alcohol use and related health and psychosocial effects vary by sex, social determinants of health (e.g., gender, income, housing, social support, etc.) and/or sub-population. Within this Research Area, funding is available for any defined population; however, for the purposes of this funding opportunity, the Specific Populations Youth; Women; and First Nations, Inuit, Métis, and/or Urban Indigenous populations will be prioritized.* Collection/disaggregation of data by defined population, and/or secondary analyses of existing datasets, would be eligible for this pool.
